Winterizing in North Texas

Maintenance and Service Schedules

Why Freeze Damage Is Not Covered, and What That Actually Costs

We get a handful of hard freezes a year and a lot of boats that were never prepared for them. Freeze damage is named directly in the manufacturers' exclusion lists.

Every year we have the same conversation in February with an owner who is genuinely surprised. The boat sat through a freeze, water trapped in the block or the drive expanded, and something cracked. They want to know whether it is covered.

It is not. And unlike some warranty questions, this one is not a gray area.

It Is Named in the Documents

Volvo Penta's exclusion list for North America gas coverage specifically excludes improper storage, and then spells out what that includes: gummed cooling or fuel systems, dried and cracking belts, hoses, impellers, bellows and seals, seized components, corrosion and freeze damage.

Freeze damage appears by name. Not by implication, not as a subcategory of neglect. By name.

Mercury's guidance is consistent. Damage from improper storage procedures is not covered under the Mercury limited warranty policy, and Mercury identifies protection from damage caused by freezing water trapped in the engine as a major consideration in preparing an outboard for storage.

Why Texas Owners Get Caught

The assumption is that we do not really freeze here. We do. North Texas reliably produces multiple nights below freezing each winter and periodically produces multi-day hard freezes that catch the region flat, as anyone who was here in February 2021 remembers.

The problem is not the average winter. It is that water does not need an average, it needs one night. A block or a drive holding residual water only has to freeze once.

The other factor is that a lot of our boats stay in the water or sit on a trailer outside, uncovered or partially covered, right through the winter. A boat in a heated garage is a different risk profile from a boat on a driveway in Lewisville.

What Freeze Damage Actually Costs

The range runs from a cracked manifold or exhaust elbow, which is unpleasant but survivable, to a cracked block on a sterndrive, which on most gas engines means repowering. That is a five-figure repair, paid entirely by the owner.

Lower units are their own category. Water trapped in a gear case over winter freezes, expands and cracks the housing. This is one of the most common freeze failures on outboards and the reason gear lube gets changed before storage rather than after. Changing it before means any water that found its way in gets removed rather than sitting there all winter.

What Proper Winterizing Covers

The scope varies by engine type, but broadly:

  • Drain or circulate antifreeze through the cooling system on inboards and sterndrives so no raw water remains
  • Change gear lube or drive lubricant before storage, and inspect what comes out for water
  • Stabilize the fuel and run the treated fuel through the system so it reaches the injectors, not just the tank
  • Fog the cylinders where the manufacturer calls for it
  • Battery removed or on a maintainer
  • Drain plugs pulled, bilge dry, boat covered and positioned to shed water rather than hold it

The Record Matters Too

Worth noting for anyone weighing doing it themselves. If a freeze failure happens and you have documentation showing the boat was properly winterized, the conversation with the manufacturer is at least a conversation. With no record, it is not.

Volvo Penta's coverage requires written proof of maintenance to the prescribed schedule, and storage preparation is part of that schedule.

When to Book

Before the first freeze warning, not after. Our winterizing schedule fills through late fall, and the week a cold front is announced is the week everyone calls at once. If your boat is still uncovered in December, call us.

What the Manufacturer Documentation Says

Volvo Penta Freeze damage named explicitly in the exclusion list
Mercury Damage from improper storage not covered
Most common outboard failure Water in the gear case freezing and cracking the housing
Worst case cost Cracked block on a sterndrive, typically a repower
Gear lube timing Change before storage, not after
Documentation Storage preparation is part of the prescribed schedule
